When it comes to weddings, very few things have changed over the years. Even today, the traditions of rice being thrown abides by certain superstitions. The same is true of the hearty abundance of flowers found at most weddings. These and many other older traditions continue on despite the fact that the original meanings have often gone forgotten. Knowing where these rituals and customs came from is an important part of your wedding ceremony. Yes, it’s amazing that you are getting married, but knowing what these customs stand for can add special meaning to your wedding.

Wedding flowers are traditionally carried by the bride down the aisle to greet her groom. This is an ancient tradition beginning with the bride toting herbs and spices such as thyme and garlic while walking to her husband to be. She would do this to ward off any evil spirits that could potentially harm their marriage.

Showering a newly married couple with rice is perhaps the most ancient tradition that is believed to bless the couple with high fertility and many children. This is because rice is considered a “life giving” seed. This is a symbol of those in attendance wishing an abundance of life in the new marriage.

The bride carrying flowers has come from many countries at many different times and has evolved over time to even brides carrying silk flowers simply for beauty and color. This ritual actually began as a woman carrying strong herbs such as garlic, to ward off evil spirits.

It’s always fun to create your own unique traditions, as well as learn what the old traditions you may be carrying on represent. These are just a few of the many ancient traditions carried out in today’s wedding ceremonies.
