Weddings are one of the largest expenses most couples face before marriage. Many couples have a small budget to work with but are determine to see their dream wedding flourish. Surprisingly, the average couple spends nearly $28,000 on their wedding. This number varies greatly, depending on geographical location. For New Yorkers, the average wedding costs around $63,000. So, to make sure that the newly married couple has money to spend on a honeymoon, house and car one day, they must know where to trim the costs.

If working within a tight budget, there are several ways to trim costs. Everything from the venue to florals can be adjusted for budget-friendly spending.

There are ways to cut costs on a gown. Opt for a wedding dress with less beading and lace and make sure to find an outside seamstress for any alterations. A great option for future brides is wearing their mothers wedding dress, or taking to get personalized alternations on it for customization on a blank canvas. It’s dully important to try on every style wedding gown. The bride may never know when the prefect gown is selected and is half the cost of others.

Stationary is one heavy expense. Luckily the internet usage can turn in a couples favor. Choose to send save-the-dates over email, and create a personalized wedding website displaying the wedding date and time as well as engagement photos. When sending wedding invitations, opt for a single-invite and place the website on the mailed invitation, where guests can RSVP and see what attire is suggested, obtain directions and learn where the couple has registered. In doing so, the couple will save money on added printing, paper and postage.

One specific area that can cut costs is at the reception. Here is where the biggest expense falls into the mix; the venue costs, catering and guest count. It’s important for couples to make sure the people they want present are there. Therefore, they must not give in to their extended family telling them third and forth cousins need to be invited. Also, not offering single guests that aren’t’ in a serious relationship, a guest, can save dollars on extra table, chairs, catering, serving, and favors. Another suggestion would be to have a 10-12 person table verse a 6-8 person table. This will diminish any outside costs for added table decor. Vendors will often provide a 20-50% decrease in the costs of renting the venue hall if the wedding is held on a Friday or Sunday, verse a Saturday.

Favors are another great staple for saving on money. Many couples have chosen to donate a specific dollar amount to their favorite charity in lieu of their guest’s attendance. Another way to save is providing one favor to a couple as opposed to providing a favor to each guest. This is also an area that the couple can get highly creative, whereas the favor is in lieu of the escort card. If the couple enjoys baseball games, choose to supplement the cards with a baseball, containing name and table number, also serving as a gift.

There are several additional ways to trim costs. Make sure to ask friends and family for as much help as possible, if opting for a do-it-yourself wedding. Couples will sure use to the additional hands.
