Make Yourself a Reception Planning Roadmap: Set a Goal

The task of planning your wedding reception can be daunting. So many decisions, so much outside input, so many guests to consider…it’s enough to turn anyone into a bridezilla in a hurry. How can you be sure to stay on track and keep the day all about you? The best way to do this is to come up with a goal of how exactly you want this event to turn out. It can be all about the looks or what type of experience you want the guests to have, but a goal can be the best way to keep your planning on track.

In order to come up with a theme or goal that is just right for you, consider you and your future spouse as a couple. What are your interests, what type of personalities do you have, what’s your style? The easiest way to be sure your reception is just what you want it to be is to think about just who you two are…then communicate it through your choices while planning. This type of goal may be the best roadmap you have to help narrow down your search and prioritize your planning.

Now that you have your theme in mind and have set some goals for yourself, work backwards. Evaluate all the many parts and pieces that you are going to need to reconstruct this perfect event that you have in your mind…which brings us to another point – don’t keep everything in your mind. Gather every kind of inspiration that you can find all together in one place like a collage. Find pictures, magazine articles, pieces of fabric, centerpiece ideas and get them all side-by-side in one place. You already have enough going on in your mind without cramming all these ideas into it.

Don’t make the mistake of comparing your bid day with someone else’s. Everyone will have their own style and theme and that’s what makes these days so unique. If you waste time on peeking as someone else’s collage you can miss out on what you have put into your own.

Finally, don’t be afraid to be flexible. You may think you know exactly what you want for your reception, but its okay to say goodbye to some ideas that just aren’t working out. Your theme should be a guideline to help you plan but not a rule that you have to follow. When something new comes along that you’d really like to include go ahead and make some room for it. The most important thing is that you stayed true to the overall goal that you set and showed your guests the best glimpse of yourselves as a couple.
